I find it extremely frustrating to read some posts and comments on Facebook. There are posts trying to explain what the financial impact to SK residents will be if we build a new school. We all should find out as much as we can before we make such a costly decision which will affect all taxpayers for 20 plus years. Many of the facts presented come from the town and the state. To me, this is hearing it from the horse’s mouth. That information can be verified.
The frustrating part for me are the comments picking apart someone’s grammar, or people saying give up coffee, give up cable, etc. There is little to no concrete information of why we should build the schools.
It’s shameful to ask people to give up things which are small treats in their lives. Many people have these extras in life because they can’t afford to go on vacations or go out to dinner every night or other pleasures that life has to offer. These small things actually make many people happy and content.
Over the last 50 years, many of the residents that still live in South Kingstown have made sacrifices already for the school system. They paid the loans for the high school addition, the addition at Curtis Corner Middle school, the addition at Peace Dale Elementary school and for the new Broad Rock Middle School. We needed more space because of a growing student population. The residents voted to do what was right and add additional space needed for the ever growing student population
Now, it’s time to be fair to the residents of South Kingstown. Student population has dropped from approximately 4500 students down to approximately 2800 students. A new High School would be great. I for one hope we can figure a way to build one but not at the cost of hurting many of our taxpayers.
